Trainer
Also called: thoroughbred trainer, racehorse trainer, conditioner
A trainer is the licensed horseman responsible for the daily care, conditioning, and race-day management of a stable of racehorses — deciding workouts, treatments, equipment, and which races to enter.
The trainer is the person whose name appears in the program and who answers for the horse's condition and placement. Many trainers learn the craft as grooms and assistant trainers before taking out their own license; the best ones combine horsemanship — breaking, conditioning, soundness management — with a sharp eye for spotting and placing a horse.
