Sire
A sire is the father of a particular horse.
On a pedigree page, 'by [stallion name]' means that stallion is the sire. A sire's record — how many stakes horses he produces, and how fast — drives demand for his offspring at auction and the size of his stud fee. A 'first-crop sire' has runners hitting the track for the first time, so the market is still guessing.
