Exercise Rider
Also called: work rider
An exercise rider is the person who rides a racehorse during its morning training — gallops, breezes, and gate work — but not in actual races.
Exercise riders are the trainer's eyes and hands every morning: a good one comes back and says how the horse felt, where it's tight, when it's ready to run. Many jockeys begin their careers as exercise riders.
